-Katrina-

GODDESS OF THE ELEMENT OF AIR

Symbol: A triangle of the elements facing upward and separated by the line of the foundation.

Place of Existence: The Realm of the Element of Air, which takes residence along the axis of Nhearn to turn with the year. The Realm sits beneath the Realm of Heaven and above the Realm of Hell. It is often depicted that the Realm of the Element of Air is adjacent to the Realm of Earth and the Realm of Water to match with the passing of the seasons, but this has been considered representational of historic artists, and that instead the Realms weave among and throughout one another across the axis of Nhearn.

Signs: Gentle and comfortable breezes, as well as good winds for sailing, are signs that the Goddess favors the travelers. Although it is thought that rains are also a sign of Anastasia, the Goddess of the Element of Water, rain is also a sign of Katrina who commands the storms in the sky. Rain, especially over plains or farmland, are considered favorable signs of the Goddess, but stronger storms, especially ones with thunder, lightening, and strong gales, are considered wrathful signs. The sight of birds, especially hawks over land and albatross at sea, are signs that the Goddess is watchful, perhaps gathering knowledge or secrets.

Alignment: Neutral

Katrina is the Goddess of the Air, and her domain is above the foundations of the world. She creates the clouds and storms, as well as clear days and the winds. Katrina is often worshipped close to the seas alongside Anastasia, their combined elements favorable for safe and travel by sailors. While she does offer favor to those who pray for safety at sea, she is considered to be much happier to give her blessings of breeze weather and rains across the lands where farmers and field tenders give offerings for her attention rather than out of fear for their lives.

She has many worshippers across Nhearn. Throughout the Empire of Man, her shrines bless port cities, at times these shrines join with the Element of Water or even with the churches of Christianna. In the agricultural lands of the Empire, farmers display their faith with flags, windmills, tall carved poles, and statues. The elves of the plain lands, from the Great Plains in the north of Midland, to the vast valley graze lands north of Southrunn, worship Katrina as their guiding deity. Plain elves acknowledge that they were created by Vanessa of the Fae, but that their departure from the woodlands in the days of antiquity into the wide sky of the plains was blessed by Katrina. The Goddess of the Air is noted as creating its own peoples upon Nhearn; the halflings. The halflings worship Katrina though the enjoyment of growing gardens, being thankful on sunny days, reading the shapes of clouds, and utmost, they celebrate her with the creation of music.

Especially among the halflings, whose existence is largely forgotten by more war-prone domains, Katrina shares and keeps secrets. It is thought that she, along with her bird servants, exist in all places and know all things. Those who wish to gain knowledge, or to keep themselves or their plans secret, offer Katrina their worship or may attempt to trade knowledge for her boons. She is thought to always be collecting even the most trivial information so that she can try to outwit others, though she is not as malevolent with her knowledge as Maribel, the Goddess of Darkness and Shadow, who also collects knowledge as zealously.

Katrina throughout the histories of Nhearn has allied herself with the powers of good, her assistance in the creation of Nhearn and her love of the world aligned against the forces of evil that attempt to destroy it. Her worshippers have joined battles, especially in the last days of the Age of Woe where even the halflings needed to offer assistance to save the world, their divine powers able to dominate the weather, the winds, and lightning itself. In recent Ages however, it is thought that the sea and the air have been at odds, and that in the greater distances of the ocean are great storms and surges that battle with one another for dominion.
